Day 6 – Coober Pedy to William Creek
Today was the day that we decided whether or not we would be
able to make William Creek which is located approximately 200km inland from
Coober Pedy on dirt road. This was on our bucket list but seemed like something
that we weren’t going to be able to tick off due to the recent and unexpected
rain. This road has been closed or 4WD only with caution due to the wet weather
however we discovered today it was open. With a discussion with a few other travelers at the campground we decided to give it a go. We packed up camp,
left our favorite campsite yet, The Oasis, which had better bathrooms and
facilities than most hotels we’ve stayed at. We also packed up camp easily,
quickly and without argument because we did it my way hahaha! We highly
recommend this place if you are ever in Coober Pedy. Upon pack up, we did
discover that some (so and so) hit Phil's NEW car, most likely whilst we were at
IGA, so he has his first scrape. He wasn’t so worried, I however was fuming.
On the road in to William Creek we could see why the road had been closed, it
was all scuffed up from those who gave it ago against warnings. The road
however now was dry and hard and Phil was in his element with a beer in hand.
Here are some photos of the road in.
On the way in we saw a sign for Anna Creek Station of which
Phil wanted a photo with for you Rhyanna Brown! Here it is. Anna Creek Station
is the largest cattle station in the world. The size of it is the same as
Israel and for those who aren’t sure how big that is, it’s bigger than England! They have twenty thousand cattle on that station and the whole time we were
flying over it we did not see one!
We arrived in William Creek after about 2 hours of driving. This
little town is the smallest in Australia and usually has a population of just 6
people, currently there are about 25 with most of those people working at the
pub or as the pilots. We went straight to the pub on the lookout for Adams undies, which unfortunately have been removed, and also to book in our flight over Lake
Eyre tomorrow. The ceiling is however covered in business cards, passports,
fines, licences, medicare cards and anything you could think of really. The
walls were covered in writing where people had written their names, we also
added to this. Make sure you look for our names when you visit.
Our campsite for the next few days.
The Pub, restaurant, petrol station, and convenient shop.
Our name in Pink however I did write over it in black once I realised it was hardly visible!
The pub is awesome and warm, they also have the best hot
chips around. We had a few drinks, met some people who were on their way
through from South Australia and left to set up camp, just across the road
about 200mtrs, this is going to be dangerous. Once we set up camp, we had a
drink and then got ready for dinner, T-bone steak and Kokoda pasta tonight. We
had dinner, washed up and went over to the pub for a few drinks… which turned
into a few hundred. A game of pool and making some more friends and we made our
way back to camp to bed. I woke in the middle of the night to request for the
first time that Phil come with me to the toilet… just in case the dingoes got
me. Yes, they had been howling and no I wasn't serious but I did want him to come with me. He did but froze in the process as he walked there bare foot.
This was one of our new friends, he worked at Anna Creek Station with Chris, the biggest and nicest Aboriginal man we have ever met!
